EDNA forms the basis for all our developments. ENDA, which stands for EMAG DNA,
is a modular software ecosystem consisting of networked software and machine components.

When we speak of the digitization of tool machines, we essentially mean IoT (Internet of Things) or IIoT (Industrial Internet of Things). (For an explanation of the term, you can also read our blog post on this topic.) There are many different ways to breathe life into this term, depending on the approach taken and on the requirements. At EMAG, we decided to divide IoT into five development modules that act like building blocks, with each module building on the previous one:

 
 
 

Collect

Before a start in IoT can be made, the machine first has to be equipped with the necessary hardware and software. The hardware forms the core on which everything else is built. That is why we called this basis ‘EDNA IOT CORE’. The IOT CORE is an IPC (industrial PC) that is connected to the machine controller, from which it receives and records manufacturing data by means of the EDNA CORTEX software.

 

Connect

Without a network cable, IoT is no fun. This is taken care of here. EDNA CORTEX can be set up on an edge cloud, which can be used to network all machines that are equipped with an EDNA IOT CORE with CORTEX (to learn more about the topic of edge clouds, visit the related blog post here). Simultaneously, all data processed for data analysis by means of the EDNA CORTEX software environment can be collected in the edge cloud. Since our IOT CORE with CORTEX is compatible with all customary interfaces, you can use the EMAG EDGE—but you don't have to. If you wish, we’ll integrate our solution into your existing infrastructure.

Think

Many of our customers have ideas for optimizing their production, but do not have the necessary information available in the right form. Together with our partner Anacision, we offer a unique workshop in which we, together with the customers, examine the use cases relevant to them and develop solutions that we’d also be happy to implement for our customers on the basis of our ecosystem. Or the answer might already be waiting in our steadily growing portfolio of EDNA DATA APPS. This large range of added-value solutions include helpers such as the Cycle Time Monitor for keeping an eye on the current cycle time, which in turn forms the basis for the production quantity forecast for the current shift (Workpiece Counter), information on the next tool change (Smart Tool Change), and many more.

 

Visualize

Once it has been defined what data is important and this data has been analyzed in EDNA CORTEX, the data has to be visualized as transparently as possible. This is where the EDNA LIFELINE DASHBOARDS come into play. They can be used to generate clearly structured views of various key production figures. Practically any end device (smartphone, tablet, PC) can be used to view these dashboards, as long as one has the necessary access rights and is logged into the internal network.

 
 
 

Predict

As can be seen from the example of cycle time and the resulting production quantity forecast, it is possible to make predictions on the basis of the available data, at least for the near future. However, with EDNA, it is also possible to attach additional sensors to a machine and make more advanced forecasts. For example, with the aid of an acceleration sensor that measures vibrations in the machine, the EDNA HEALTH CHECK can be used to determine when an axle in the machine will fail. Thus a timely servicing date can be set, downtime scheduled and replacement parts organized. This minimizes the repair costs.
