G 375 H: Profile grinding of precision internal threads for planetary roller screw drives
Planetary roller screw drives convert rotational motion into high-precision linear motion. They are used in robotics and aviation, among other applications. The nut is the central component of these drives and requires pitch and profile accuracies in the single-digit micrometer range.
With the G 375 H profile grinding machine, the deep internal thread of these nuts can be finished in a single setup. The grinding process, using profiled CBN or corundum wheels, precisely replicates the thread contour turn by turn. Linear motors and directly driven main axes prevent pitch errors between the thread turns. Additionally, an integrated measuring probe checks the quality directly in the machine, allowing for over-size corrections to be incorporated immediately into the ongoing process.
MSC 5 DUO: Twin-spindle turning for the productive batch production of chucked components
Short non-productive times and reliable automation are crucial for the cost-effective production of chucked components in medium to large batch production. The MSC 5 DUO offers both: Two independently operating spindles in a split-bed design prevent vibrations during simultaneous machining and enable complete-machining (OP 10/OP 20) in a single setup.
The integrated 3-axis gantry loading system with a 90° workpiece changer achieves a chip-to-chip time of less than 6 seconds. Additionally, a stacker system for raw and finished parts enables unmanned operation without requiring additional floor space. Each side features a servo-controlled 8-station turret with a BMT interface.
Typical workpieces: planetary and bevel gears, pinions, sleeves, flanges, as well as components for the automotive, e medical technology, and general mechanical engineering industries. Maximum turning diameter: 120 mm, maximum turning length: 145 mm.
UG 1000: Universal Grinding for demanding workpieces up to 1,000 mm in length
The UG 1000 combines internal, external, out-of-round, and face-grinding in a single compact machine. This eliminates the need for time-consuming setup changes between different machines, while reducing lead times and increasing achievable accuracy.
The swiveling B-axis of the grinding head (-15° to +225°) also enables bevel grinding and combined internal/external operations in a single setup. The direct-drive motor spindles (7.5/11 kW) work with both corundum and CBN grinding wheels. This allows the machine to achieve a roundness of 0.5 µm on the test workpiece.
The UG 1000 is suitable for tool and fixture manufacturing, gear production, and general precision mechanics—from individual parts to small and medium-sized series. Its grinding length is 1,000 mm, its center height is 175 mm, and its maximum workpiece weight is 80 kg.
VL 3 DUO: Two-spindle turning of flex splines and circular splines for strain wave gears
Flex splines and circular splines are the central components of harmonic reducer gearboxes, which are used, for example, in joint actuators of humanoid robots. The thin-walled workpieces require tight tolerances for concentricity, coaxiality, and form accuracy. Special attention is also paid to the quality of the turning process, as it has a significant influence on the results of the subsequent gear cutting and grinding processes.
The VL 3 DUO handles the complete-machining process for both sides (OP 10 and OP 20) on a single machine. Two mirrored work areas, each with a pick-up spindle and a 12-station turret, operate in parallel. The TrackMotion automation system flips the workpieces between operations and supplies the machine from a magazine holding up to 400 components.
VT 100 with CRC robot cell: Productive shaft machining with flexible automation
The VT 100 vertical turning machine processes shafts with a diameter of up to 100 mm and a length of up to 400 mm simultaneously using two opposing turrets. Eleven tool stations per turret and four-axis simultaneous machining significantly reduce cycle time compared to conventional single-turret solutions. The vertical design allows for free chip fall and reduces chip clusters in the work area.
Loading and unloading on the VT 100 takes place directly via the turrets and takes approximately six seconds. For larger batches or more complex automation requirements, the machine can be expanded with an external workpiece supply system using the CRC robot cell. In this case, feeding can be performed via basket stacks, drawer systems, infeed and outfeed conveyors, or bin picking with 3D sensory equipment.
The CRC cell is designed to match the pick-up architecture of EMAG machines and can be easily retrofitted to existing systems.
Manufacturing solutions for gear components of humanoid robots
Humanoid robots require compact, heavy-duty joint actuators whose performance depends directly on the manufacturing quality of the gear components. At AMB, EMAG will demonstrate how demanding workpieces for modern robotic drives can be manufactured economically and with high repeatability.
The focus is on circular splines with high-precision internal gear teeth, thin-walled flex splines, wave generators with elliptical functional contours, planetary gears for high-torque gearboxes, and planetary roller screw spindles for linear actuators. All these components combine very tight form and position tolerances, delicate geometries, and high requirements for reproducibility in series production.
At the booth, you will learn which workpieces determine the performance of humanoid robots and which manufacturing technologies EMAG offers for this purpose—with practical examples from real-world robotics and gear applications.
