Universal Grinding - Efficient Complete-Machining

Universal grinding of chucked components involves the combined internal and external grinding of a workpiece on one machine. Even complex geometries can be machined in a single setup. Today, modern universal grinding machines make it possible in a single operation what used to require several specialized machines. In addition, shaft machining between centers with straight and angular plunge-cut is possible with the B-axis. This means that shoulders can be machined on both sides in a single setup.

Universal Grinding Technology

Typical grinding processes on a universal grinding machine include

  • Internal cylindrical grinding, external cylindrical grinding and face-grinding
  • Shoulder grinding and taper grinding (conical surfaces)
  • Face grinding and plunge-cut grinding (profile or groove machining)
  • Surface grinding (tangential surfaces)

The CNC control also simplifies the dressing of the grinding wheels and allows the integration of measuring and monitoring systems. Advanced control and software solutions (e.g. adaptive process control based on inline measurements) increase quality and repeat accuracy.

The EMAG UG Series comprises universal grinding machines for precision internal and external grinding. The UG 400, 630, 1000 and 1500 models enable complete grinding operations in a single setup.

EMAG UG series

The EMAG UG Series is an example of high-performance universal grinding machines. It comprises four models (UG 400, 630, 1000, 1500) and covers grinding lengths from 400 mm to 1500 mm. The machines combine precision, flexibility and process reliability in a compact design. All UG machines are based on a stable machine base, feed axes with recirculating roller guides with glass measuring system and allow precision internal, external and out-of-round grinding in a single setup or the machining of shafts between centers.

Application Areas

Universal grinding machines are used in almost all areas of precision manufacturing. Typical sectors include general mechanical and plant engineering, the automotive and aviation industries, as well as tool and mold making .

Avantages Universal Loops

  • Single clamping: Multiple sanding operations in one setup saves set-up and cycle times. A modern universal machine completes several work steps in one setup that previously required several machines.
  • Complete workpiece machining: With the help of combined internal and external grinding spindles and swivel axes (B and C axes), it is possible to carry out internal, external and out-of-round grinding in a single setup.
  • High precision: Fixed machine bases, direct drive spindles and integrated measuring probes ensure tight tolerances and high reproducibility. The complete machining process without reclamping minimizes thermal and tactile influences.
  • Productivity gains: Up to four different grinding wheels can be combined in one setup. This allows rough-machining and finishing steps or different diameter machining operations to be carried out one after the other, often without retooling the grinding wheels.
  • Cost efficiency: The reduction in the number of machines required and shorter retooling times reduce production costs.
