The 19″ FANUC iHMI operating panel from EMAG combines state-of-the-art control technology with ergonomic design. Ralf Mayer, Head of EDNA Operations at EMAG, gives an insight into the technical specifications and background of the new HMI.
Can you start by giving us an overview of the new 19” control panel with FANUC iHMI?
Our new 19” control panel with FANUC iHMI is a state-of-the-art user interface that we have applied specifically to our VL and VT vertical lathes. It combines advanced technology with intuitive operation.
What were the main objectives in the development of this new control panel?
Our main objectives were to improve ergonomics, increase operating efficiency and optimize user-friendliness. We wanted to create a system that would help our customers to increase their productivity and at the same time simplify the operation of the machines.
Can you tell us more about the ergonomic aspects of the panel?
Naturally. A key feature is the swivel-mounted 19-inch multi-touch screen. It can be positioned flexibly, which makes it easy to operate and reduces fatigue during prolonged use. In addition, the large, interactive surface offers enough space to see all the important information at a glance.

Tiltable 19-inch, multi-touch control panel with large interactive surface, can be flexibly positioned for ergonomic operation on a machine tool.
How have you improved usability?
We have integrated various elements to optimize user-friendliness. These include an integrated QWERTY keyboard for fast input and a specially designed machine panel for direct access to frequently used functions. We have also designed the user interface to be intuitive, with categorized applications and a vertical shortcut bar for quick access to important functions.

Increased efficiency thanks to integrated QWERTY keyboard and machine control panel. Various buttons and controls for frequently used functions are quickly accessible.
What about the software? What functionalities does the FANUC iHMI offer?
The FANUC iHMI offers a range of advanced functions. We have integrated EMAG-specific input and diagnostic masks that optimize control and fault diagnosis. An integrated password manager enables user-defined protection levels. We are particularly proud of our new feature correction, which has been given a complete overhaul under the name “FeatureCorrection”.
How does the new NC system support the programmer?
We have integrated some useful tools for programmers. The program editor has syntax highlighting and a structured display, which makes programming much easier. The Fanuc Program Manager optimizes the management of NC programs. Another highlight is the G-Code Guidance, which supports the parameterization and insertion of machining cycles.
That sounds very comprehensive. Are there any other functions that you would like to highlight?
One function that is very popular with our customers is the realistic machining simulation. It allows the workpiece to be freely rotated around 3 axes and offers the option to measure manually within the simulation and reduces errors before the actual machining process.

Screen view of the 3D simulation of the workpiece. In the center is a detailed 3D model of the workpiece, which can be turned freely around three axes. Around the model are the control elements for rotation. At the bottom of the screen, tools for manual measurement, including length and angle measurement. The user interface enables interactive control and analysis of the virtual workpiece before actual machining.
And the documentation? Often a critical point in production.
I agree, and we have taken care to optimize this aspect. Important documents such as maintenance manuals and circuit diagrams are available directly on the control unit. Users can also import their own documents and access them at any time. This saves time and avoids errors.
How do you see the future of machine control and what role does the new control panel play in this?
The future of machine control lies in the combination of user-friendliness, efficiency and advanced technology. Our new 19″ control panel with FANUC iHMI is an important step in this direction. It enables our customers to optimize their manufacturing processes and simplify operation at the same time. We see it as a basis for further design and development, especially in the area of networking and data analysis.
