This year\u2019s MAT2 graduates share how EMAG\u2019s apprenticeship program helped them discover their strengths, build confidence, and begin rewarding careers in advanced manufacturing.<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Building Careers Through Hands-On Learning<\/h3>\n

At EMAG, apprenticeship isn’t just a pathway into manufacturing \u2013 it’s the foundation of our company culture. Since 2013, EMAG LLC has trained dozens of young professionals through the Michigan Advanced Technician Training (MAT2<\/sup>) <\/strong>program, a German-style apprenticeship designed to bridge the gap between classroom learning and hands-on experience.<\/p>\n

This year, we proudly celebrate the graduation of Levi Rittinger and Nil Skrzypczak, two apprentices who have completed the rigorous three-year program and are now beginning their next chapter as full-time members of the EMAG team.<\/p>\n

Learning Through Experience<\/h3>\n

Both Levi and Nil took different paths to EMAG but shared a curiosity about how things work and a desire to learn by doing them.<\/p>\n

Nil, a graduate of Kettering High School, first heard about MAT2<\/sup> through an event where the program was introduced to students interested in technical careers. \u201cI always liked working with my hands,\u201d he said. \u201cWhen I learned EMAG was part of MAT2<\/sup>, it seemed like the perfect fit.\u201d<\/p>\n

Levi, from Stevenson High School, admits he didn\u2019t initially see himself in manufacturing. \u201cWhen MAT2<\/sup> came to speak at our school, I wasn\u2019t that interested\u201d, he said. \u201cBut later that year, I decided college wasn\u2019t the right direction for me. My neighbor Paul worked at EMAG, and after learning more about it, I applied \u2013 and it turned out to be exactly what I needed.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Hands-On Learning Meets Real-World Problem Solving<\/h3>\n

Over the course of three years, EMAG apprentices rotate through mechanical, setup and commissioning departments \u2013 each offering a different perspective on machine tool manufacturing. The program combines technical college courses with immersive, hands-on experience on the shop floor.<\/p>\n

Apprentices gain skills in PLC programming, mechanical assembly, wiring and electronics theory, along with machining fundamentals, safety and maintenance. \u201cThe classroom work gives you a great base, but you really start learning when you\u2019re here, solving problems with your team,\u201d Nil said.<\/p>\n

\u201cEveryone in the shop is patient and takes the time to teach. From day one, they walk you through every step. You\u2019re not just observing \u2013 you’re contributing.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Both credit their mentors and coworkers for creating a positive learning environment. \u201cIt\u2019s a team effort,\u201d said Nil. \u201cEveryone wants to see you succeed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Finding Their Place<\/h3>\n

Nil found his passion working with EMAG\u2019s commissioning team, where he enjoyed troubleshooting and problem-solving. \u201cI liked working on powered-up machines, testing systems and seeing everything come together,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Levi gravitated toward machine setup, appreciating the precision and teamwork required. \u201cI enjoyed working directly with customers and being part of a team that makes machines come to life,\u201d he said. \u00a0\u201cThat\u2019s where I really learned how much responsibility we carry \u2013 these are machines customers rely on, and it matters that we get it right.\u201d<\/p>\n

The two worked side by side throughout the program, learning from each other\u2019s strengths. \u201cWe pushed each other to improve,\u201d Levi said. \u201cIt made the whole experience better.\u201d<\/p>\n

Inside EMAG’s Apprenticeship Program<\/h3>\n

EMAG\u2019s apprenticeship program is led by Bobby Larvick, who knows the experience firsthand \u2013 he was one of EMAG\u2019s earliest apprentices himself.<\/p>\n

\u201cEMAG was one of the founding companies for the MAT2<\/sup> program,\u201d Bobby explained. \u201cOur first apprentice started in 2013 and still works here today. The goal was simple: fill critical manufacturing roles with highly skilled people who understand both the theory and the hands-on side of machine building.\u201d<\/p>\n

What makes EMAG\u2019s approach unique, he says, is its German-style training model. \u201cMany U.S. apprenticeships are based on union trades with narrow specialization,\u201d Bobby said. \u201cAt EMAG, our apprentices learn broadly across disciplines \u2013 machining, assembly, controls and mechatronics \u2013 before focusing on a specific area. By the time they finish, they\u2019re competent in all the basics and can build a career in whichever direction they choose.\u201d<\/p>\n

The three-year program combines classroom instruction with real shop-floor training. Students spend their first year mastering fundamentals, then rotate departments like mechanical assembly, commissioning, and setup. In the later years, they work directly with EMAG\u2019s experts and contribute to live projects \u2013 even customer installations.<\/p>\n

Bobby\u2019s own experience gives him a unique perspective. \u201cWhen I went through the program, I loved that balance between work and school. You never got burnt out \u2013 you were learning something new every day,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s rewarding now to help others through that same process.<\/p>\n

A Supportive Environment for Growth<\/h3>\n

Ask anyone in the apprenticeship program about the EMAG culture, and they\u2019ll tell you it feels like a family. Apprentices describe a \u201cbig sibling-little sibling” atmosphere where humor, teamwork and accountability go hand in hand.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s friendly, supportive and focused on doing things right,\u201d said Nil. \u201cPeople take the time to help you, even when they\u2019re busy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Looking Ahead<\/h3>\n

Both graduates plan to continue growing within EMAG. Nil hopes to gain more experience in commissioning before exploring additional responsibilities or a potential engineering degree. Levi plans to keep learning across different areas of production and also pursuing a degree in engineering or management. \u201cI just want to be as versatile as possible for the company,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

For both, the apprenticeship offered more than just a career start \u2013 it provided financial freedom and real-world experience.<\/p>\n

\u201cChoosing the apprenticeship route gave me a career I actually enjoy,\u201d Levi said. \u201cI got my education paid for, I learned on the job, and I\u2019m already building my future.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou either pay to learn or get paid to learn \u2013 I’d rather get paid.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Advice for Future Apprentices<\/h3>\n

When asked what advice they\u2019d give to new apprentices, both had simple but powerful answers.<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t let off the gas,\u201d said Nil. \u201cKeep your head down, keep learning and listen to the people around you \u2013 there’s so much knowledge here.\u201d<\/p>\n

Levi agreed: \u201cEnjoy the process and keep an open mind. You might end up finding your passion in a place you didn\u2019t expect.\u201d<\/p>\n

A Lasting Legacy<\/h3>\n

For Bobby Larvick, seeing apprentices like Nil and Levi graduate is the most rewarding part of his role.<\/p>\n

\u201cWatching them go from knowing little about manufacturing to becoming productive, confident team members \u2013 that\u2019s what it\u2019s all about,\u201d he said. \u201cThey\u2019re the future of EMAG, and it\u2019s exciting to see where they\u2019ll go next.\u201d<\/p>\n

About the EMAG Apprenticeship Program<\/h3>\n

EMAG\u2019s three-year apprenticeship is part of the Michigan Advanced Technician Training (MAT2<\/sup>) initiative, developed through the German American Chamber of Commerce. The program combines paid, hands-on training at EMAG with accredited coursework at partner colleges, giving students both a technical degree and three years of real-world experience \u2013 all without student debt.<\/p>\n
