When Vince Zamora first joined EMAG as an intern in 2022, the office was still quiet from the effects of COVID-19. But even in those early days, one thing was clear \u2013 this was a place where young engineers could gain <\/span>real experience<\/span>, take ownership of their work and grow alongside a supportive team. Today, Vince is a full-time mechanical engineer at EMAG, and his journey from co-op student to team member highlights the value of hands-on learning and a company culture built on collaboration.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Finding the Right Fit<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

Vince attended Kettering University, where he studied mechanical engineering as part of the school\u2019s renowned co-op rotation program. His internship search led him to EMAG \u2013 not far from home and already well-connected with Kettering through its job board, job fairs and internship program.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAs a requirement of graduation, I needed to complete 5 work rotations or 15 months of full-time work,\u201d Vince explains. \u201cEMAG\u2019s relationship with Kettering and its proximity made it a natural fit.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Learning <\/span>by<\/span> Doing<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

Vince\u2019s internship kicked off with a variety of foundational tasks \u2013 from making blueprints to supporting the engineering team with design work. Over time, his role grew alongside the company\u2019s post-COVID rebound, giving him more responsibility each year.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He even completed his thesis through EMAG, developing a conceptual layout for a laser welding machine using a robotic cell \u2013 designed with the potential to be implemented in the future.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI really appreciated how hands-on the experience was,\u201d Vince says. \u201cThe projects helped me connect classroom concepts with real-world applications.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

That practical exposure came with its fair share of lessons: learning to communicate clearly, asking the right questions and developing the patience to solve problems \u2013 especially when things didn\u2019t go according to plan.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThere were definitely times where miscommunication led to frustration,\u201d he admits. \u201cBut I learned how to take a step back, reassess the situation, and move forward. <\/span>That\u2019s where the real growth happens.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

From his manager\u2019s perspective, that growth was clear. \u201cWhen Vince first started at EMAG, he wasn\u2019t very familiar with our complex machines or processes, which can be tricky and hard to learn,\u201d recalls Marco Weigele, Engineering Manager. \u201cIt was awesome to see how he picked up more and more throughout each work term. He went from helping with small tasks and updating drawings to designing full pallet solutions and making complete machine layouts.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Choosing to Stay<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

After 3.5 years of rotating between school and work \u2013 accumulating about 21 months of experience \u2013 Vince officially joined EMAG full time.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThere were a few things that really influenced by decision to stay,\u201d he says. \u201cI get along really well with the team, I feel like my work is valued and I was excited to take on more responsibility.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As a full-time engineer, Vince\u2019s day-to-day is project-based, often jumping between tasks as priorities shift. \u201cIt\u2019s a bit like playing whack-a-mole,\u201d he laughs. \u201cBut it keeps things interesting.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

One of the biggest changes since going full time? The relief of job security \u2013 and the freedom to invest more deeply in longer-term projects. He\u2019s also had the opportunity to introduce new tools and skills that have helped improve the team\u2019s capabilities.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cVince was always eager to dive into new challenges and learn from design experiences,\u201d Marco adds. \u201cOn his thesis, he worked very independently and brought his own ideas into how to realize a fully automated robotic cell. It was a great accomplishment and something we can now present to customers as an automation option.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

A Culture <\/span>That<\/span> Encourages<\/span> Growth<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

What stood out most to Vince during his internship, and continues to today, is EMAG\u2019s culture.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s friendly, collaborative and people genuinely care about each other,\u201d he shares. \u201cEven when I was still in school, the team would check in, offer support and share their knowledge. There\u2019s a constant motivation to improve \u2013 not just the machines, but ourselves and how we work as a team.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That mentorship is something that EMAG intentionally builds into its internship program. \u201cIt\u2019s important to make sure our interns are part of the team from the start,\u201d Marco explains. \u201cWe pair them with more experienced employees, take time to show them how our systems and machines work, and guide them along the way. <\/span>That mentorship is fundamental to their success.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Vince has even had the chance to collaborate with interns from other schools and from Germany, gaining insight into global perspectives within the company. He\u2019s also continuing to learn, recently attending a supplier-led training in metal-cutting technologies and making plans to broaden his understanding of how EMAG\u2019s systems work beyond the mechanical side.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Looking Ahead<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

As Vince looks to the future, he\u2019s excited to keep developing \u2013 both professionally and personally.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m working toward taking the Mechanical Engineering exam to solidify everything I\u2019ve learned,\u201d he says. \u201cI also want to better understand EMAG\u2019s machines as a whole, not just from a mechanical standpoint.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Now that he\u2019s full time, he\u2019s taking on projects from start to finish and even working more directly with customers \u2013 something he\u2019s eager to explore further.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s OK to make mistakes here,\u201d Vince says. \u201cThat\u2019s one of the best ways to learn. And having a team that supports you through that makes all the difference.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Words of Advice<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

For any engineering students considering an internship at EMAG, Vince has simple but valuable advice:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe longer you stay, the more you\u2019ll learn \u2013 and the more responsibility you\u2019ll be given. You\u2019ll gain industry knowledge that you just can\u2019t get in a classroom. Plus, you get to work with people across the world and departments like purchasing, production and service, which gives you a much broader understanding of how everything comes together.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And if he could go back and tell his past self one thing?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t be afraid to ask questions or make mistakes. Keep a detailed log of your projects \u2013 it\u2019ll help you later. And take full advantage of all the resources around you.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

EMAG\u2019s leadership sees this as one of the key benefits of their engineering internship program. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a great way to introduce students to real-world engineering,\u201d Marco says. \u201cThey gain experience, develop technical skills and learn how the organization works over time. And for EMAG, it allows us to train and develop future talent who are already familiar with our systems. The transition to full-time is so much smoother when the foundation is already in place.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Life Beyond Engineering<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

When he\u2019s not at work, Vince enjoys giving back to his community, attending car shows and working on his own vehicles. He\u2019s also a big fan of family time \u2013 especially up north where he can spend time hiking and kayaking.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As for favorite EMAG memories? The annual Christmas party ranks high on the list: \u201cIt\u2019s a great time to pause, celebrate the year\u2019s accomplishments and enjoy some good food \u2013 and of course, the German beer.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And yes, there was that one time he accidently broke three computers and had to tell EMAG\u2019s IT Manager, Bjorn. \u201cLet\u2019s just say it was a learning experience,\u201d he jokes.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

From breaking into the industry during a challenging time to finding a permanent place on the team, Vince\u2019s story is a great example of what\u2019s possible when early-career engineers are empowered to grow. His journey reflects not just his personal drive, but the kind of opportunity EMAG offers those willing to learn, adapt and take initiative.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And he\u2019s got one more recent milestone worth celebrating:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI finally got to move my desk to face the window,\u201d Vince says with a smile. <\/span>\u201cIt\u2019s the little things.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
