It can be a lot.<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong>We caught up with David Fitzgerald, EMAG\u2019s Regional Sales Manager, to talk about how the VT 4 vertical turning center is helping manufacturers check all the right boxes.<\/strong><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Q: When you\u2019re talking to shaft manufacturers, what are they struggling with the most?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>David: <\/strong>In a word \u2013 efficiency. Everyone\u2019s trying to do more with less: fewer machines, fewer operators, smaller footprint, faster cycle times. And they still need top-tier quality. Whether it\u2019s output or transfer shafts, pinions or something more niche like gun barrels, the core need is the same: produce a lot, produce it fast and don\u2019t take up half the shop doing it.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Q: That\u2019s a big ask. How does the VT 4 actually help with all of that?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>David: <\/strong>It really boils down to this: The VT 4 does what most machines can\u2019t \u2013 all in one setup. It\u2019s got two turrets with live tooling and simultaneous 4-axis machining, so you\u2019re cutting from both sides at once. You can turn, drill, mill, even brush \u2013 all in the same machine. Normally you\u2019d need a second machine just for those extra ops. Not here. It\u2019s doing secondary operations, too?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>David: <\/strong>Exactly. Let\u2019s say you\u2019ve got to mill a slot then drill and brush to deburr the slot. With most machines, you\u2019re handling it off to a second op \u2013 extra time, extra tooling, more space. With the VT 4, it\u2019s one and done. The base is made from Mineralit polymer concrete, which dampens vibration really well \u2013 way better than cast iron. Plus, there\u2019s a chiller system that keeps things thermally stable: the base, the turrets, the spindle, all of it. And if you\u2019re really chasing precision, there\u2019s a touch probe on the turret for in-process quality checks. How is it built into the machine?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>David: <\/strong>Yeah, and that\u2019s what sets the VT series apart. The automation is fully integrated \u2013 not bolted on later. The turrets actually handle loading and unloading using built-in grippers. So once the raw parts are on our built-in conveyer \u2013 either by hand or robot \u2013 the VT 4 just does its thing. Even if your line includes other brands, you can plug the VT 4 into the workflow. We\u2019ll help you figure out how to feed parts in and out \u2013 whether that\u2019s conveyors, robots or something custom. Integration isn\u2019t a roadblock.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Q: You mentioned the VT 4. What\u2019s the VT 200?<\/h3>\n<p><strong>David: <\/strong>It\u2019s basically the same machine. The only difference is the control system \u2013 the VT 4 runs on Fanuc, the VT 200 on Siemens. Everything else \u2013 the size, the turrets, the automation \u2013 is identical.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Q: Let\u2019s talk dollars. Is this machine competitively priced?<\/h3>\n<p><strong>David: <\/strong>Yes. We\u2019ve been very intentional about pricing. When you factor in that you\u2019re eliminating secondary machines and extra setups, the VT 4 often comes out ahead \u2013 even compared to the basic 4-axis lathes.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Q: Lead times are always a concern. How quickly can someone get this machine?<\/h3>\n<p><strong>David: <\/strong>We\u2019ve got stock machines ready to go, and even custom setups don\u2019t take as long as you\u2019d think.
