Shaft machining VTC
4-axis vertical machining of shafts
The strength of the VTC 100-4 Vertical Turning Machine lies in the machining of large quantities of shafts with diameters of up to 400 mm. The full integration into the machine concept of the automatic loading and unloading of the workpieces offers a manufacturing system that is characterised by its short travels. This is complemented by a powerful main spindle (34 kW, 144 Nm, 6000 rpm). Loading of the vertical turning machine via the turret is very fast.

The VTC 100-4 Vertical Turning Machine is a 4-axis machine. The overhead mainspindle is located in the centre of its upper section. Below it is a tailstock. The workpieces (shafts) are clamped between mainspindle and tailstock and supported by a steady. The machining operations are carried out by two turrets with 12 tool stations each. One of the stations accommodates a workpiece gripper that conveys the workpiece into and out of the vertical turning machine. This leaves 11 tools for the machining of the workpiece. These can be turning tools or driven tools. To the left and right of the machining area are close-looped conveyor belts that store raw-parts and finish-machined components.
Technical Data
| Chuck dia. | mm | 160 |
| Workpiece dia., max | mm | 63 |
| Workpiece length, max | mm | 400 |
| X-axis travel | mm | 340 |
| Z-axis travel | mm | 625 |
Advantages
- Shorter cycle times through four-axis machining
- The machine can be used as a stand-alone or in a production line
- Reduced idle times through cycle time-concurrent loading and unloading
- Raw-part and finished component storage form an integral part of the machine
- Less expense for automation and peripherals
- The vertical construction of the machine and the resulting free chip flow prevent the creation of “birdsnest” chip formations
- Less operator intervention (tailstock and steady are CN-controlled, the turrets can be accessed directly)
- Short setting and resetting times owing to great machine accessibility and operator friendliness
- Less investment required in sensors, as the machine axes are direct driven and the machine’s control system is of the latest design
- The compact, vertical construction of the machine makes for a small footprint

The VTC 100-2 is specially designed for vertical shaft machining and thus turns this classic horizontal machining process on its head. Users of these vertical turning centers benefit from minimized throughput times, safer processes and high accuracy.
The VTC 100-2 is loaded by a gripper in the turret. This picks up the workpieces from the lateral workpiece supply and places them in the spindle / tailstock.
